LUXURY, SHAPED BY MATERIAL
At Parmigiani Fleurier, innovation is never
imposed. It is developed over time, extending the Maison’s approach beyond
traditional complications into new territories, notably that of
high-performance materials.
For 2026, the TONDA PF Sport Chronograph
Ultra-Cermet Mineral Blue continues this exploration.
Here, Ultra-Cermet
becomes an architectural language. Shaped with the same discipline as the
movement it protects, it ceases to be perceived as technology and becomes part
of the watch's identity.
ULTRA-CERMET: A STRUCTURAL EVOLUTION
Ultra-Cermet is a highly advanced material that
combines the properties of an advanced ceramic with those of titanium. Unlike
conventional ceramics, which are primarily composed of zirconium oxide, this
hybrid composition endows the material with a cool metallic character and a
remarkable ability to reflect light.
Depending on ambient lighting conditions, the Tonda PF
Sport Chronograph reveals shifting tonal nuances, ranging from anthracite and
deep black to subtle blue reflections.
The development of this material required more than
three years of research to achieve the desired result. It is produced through a
manufacturing process known as sintering, whereby fine ceramic and titanium
powders are compacted under heat and pressure to form a solid mass. This
technique enables the two components to be united without bringing them to
their melting point.
Only the finest and most homogeneous powders are
selected, with more than 90% of the production being discarded. This stage is
essential to ensuring the highest material quality, optimising machinability
and enabling the manufacture of the 73 components that make up the Tonda PF
Sport case. The material is worked using dedicated tooling and diamond-cutting
instruments.
Its fine and homogeneous microstructure facilitates
the creation of complex forms, enhances machinability and allows exceptionally
thin walls to be achieved. With a metal content of 40%, it retains a cool
tactile sensation while offering outstanding light-reflecting properties. Its
hardness reaches 1,450 HV on the Vickers scale.
Exceptionally resistant to scratches, this composite
material combines the properties of a ceramic, particularly hardness and
resistance to high temperatures, with those of a metal. These characteristics
make it a material of choice for applications in aerospace, high-precision
tooling and electronics.
On the wrist, this expertise becomes tangible. The
material retains a cool touch and reflects light with measured metallic
clarity, revealing subtle tonal variations.
Such properties require a dedicated manufacturing
approach. Machining demands diamond tools, tightly controlled production cycles
and rigorous management of mechanical constraints. Its lower ductility compared
with steel or titanium necessitates extremely precise assembly tolerances,
while its thermal behaviour is carefully calibrated to ensure the integration
of sapphire components and water resistance to 100 metres.
Ultra-Cermet is not applied as a surface treatment. It
forms the very structure of the object.
A COMPLETE ULTRA-CERMET ARCHITECTURE
Parmigiani Fleurier remains the first watchmaker to
conceive a timepiece entirely crafted in Ultra-Cermet.
In this Mineral Blue edition, this commitment is
expressed without compromise. The 42.5 mm case, fluted bezel, crown,
chronograph pushers and pin buckle are all crafted in this material.
The alternation of polished and satin finishes reveals
the finesse and density of its structure. Light glides precisely across
surfaces, enhancing the sculptural quality of the case without excessive
contrast. Strength is present, yet controlled, and modernity asserts itself
without excess.
MINERAL BLUE:
DEPTH IN BALANCE
Mineral Blue introduces depth and nuance to the
monochromatic architecture of Ultra-Cermet.
The satin-finished dial combines Blackor and Mineral
Blue tones and absorbs light before releasing it with remarkable depth and
tonal variation. Eighteen-carat gold appliques, Blackor-plated and
hand-applied, reinforce legibility and proportional balance, while luminescent
coatings ensure optimal readability in all conditions.
The chronograph and small-seconds hands, crafted in
Blackor-plated steel, extend the watch’s refined technical identity.
The rubber strap, in a Mineral Blue tone, has been
developed as an integral part of the watch's architecture. Its precise
construction ensures comfort and stability on the wrist, while its subtly
textured surface evokes the refinement of a textile.
Supple on the wrist and precise in its fit, it follows
each movement without constraint, extending the watch's architectural logic.
Its performance remains controlled, never demonstrative.
Fastened by an Ultra-Cermet
pin buckle, it extends the architectural language of the case to the final
point of contact.
Colour remains restrained. The
material takes precedence.
CALIBRE
PF070: DISCIPLINE AT 5 HERTZ
At the
heart of the TONDA PF Sport Chronograph Ultra-Cermet Mineral Blue beats the
PF070 manufacture calibre, COSC-certified and oscillating at 36,000 vibrations
per hour.
This
high-frequency architecture enhances chronometric stability and short-time
measurement precision, supported by a 65-hour power reserve. Comprising 288
components and 42 jewels while maintaining a controlled thickness of just 6.95
mm, the movement reflects Parmigiani Fleurier's pursuit of mechanical
complexity governed by proportion.
Through
the sapphire case back, open-worked bridges with satin finishing reveal their
geometry, accompanied by a skeletonised oscillating weight in 22-carat rose
gold, polished and sandblasted.
The
movement expresses rhythm, while Ultra-Cermet expresses structure.
SPORTING ELEGANCE
With the TONDA PF Sport Chronograph Ultra-Cermet Mineral Blue, material
innovation becomes a discipline in service of the movement.
Ultra-Cermet brings structural purity, exceptional hardness and lasting
surface integrity. Mineral Blue introduces depth and balance, and the PF070
calibre ensures high-frequency precision.
Designed to accompany a contemporary lifestyle, balancing activity, travel
and personal time, this chronograph reconciles performance with measured
elegance. Performance remains controlled. Style emerges naturally.
Over time, the watch preserves the integrity of its form with the same
precision that governs its movement.
